Description TLONDON SEWAGE; THE CROSSNESS PUMPING STATION. Despite some natural disadvantages arising from its situation, London is probably better drained than any other great city. and its low death rate bears testimony to the excellence of the sewerage system. Three great sewers serve the south side of the river. Our illustration shows us the great Pumping Engine which has been erected for the purpose of raising the sewage brought down by the southern sewer at its outfall into the Thames at Crossness, which lies about 14 miles to tho east of London Bridge; four engines of a nominal horse power of 125 I.H.P. are used for the pumping, and tho work goes on night and day. Some idea of the magnitude of the operation may be obtained from the statement that the sewer at Crossness has a diameter of no less than eleven feet. The solid matter is now for the most part carried out to sea by specially constructed barges.
