Summary
[edit]DescriptionCrop near Combpyne - geograph.org.uk - 1397456.jpg |
English: Crop near Combpyne Unlike, wheat and barley, oats are probably native to Britain. the are immediately distinguishable from the other cereals: their grains do not point upwards in clusters at the top of the stem but hang individually at the side, forming an open, pyramidal seed head called a pinnacle. The grains are encased in close-fitting husks like those of barley, but with light, loosely attached chaff. Oat straw has a high feeding value for livestock.
Oats were formerly a basic food for horses, but with modern horse feeds this has resulted in smaller crops. Relatively more oats are produced in Scotland, as oats are the best cereal for growing on poor soil and ripen with the minimum of sunshine. The two most popular strains are grey oats for sowing in the autumn and black oats for spring sowing. |
