Summary
[edit]DescriptionCripplegate Foundation window at St Giles' - geograph.org.uk - 432826.jpg |
English: Cripplegate Foundation window at St Giles' Although St Giles is the patron saint of beggars and cripples, the name Cripplegate refers to a mediaeval covered way or tunnel running from the city wall to the Barbican.
There has been a long tradition of charitable support in the parish which was at one time almost a byword for poverty and deprivation. John Sworder (represented at the top of this modern window) made the first recorded gift in his will, dated 2nd April 1500, and many others made donations and left legacies to help the poor in the centuries that followed. Cripplegate Foundation was established in 1891 by a scheme made under the London Parochial Charities Act of 1883. This amalgamated all the charitable donations previously administered as separate trusts and continues today as a source of funding for social projects in the area. |
