English: This photograph was taken by the Victor 6000 underwater vehicle during a dive on the Rainbow hydrothermal site (between 2200 and 2300 m deep). There we observed a swarm of deep-sea shrimp Rimicaris exoculata and Mirocaris fortunata . First observed at the TAG site at 3600 m depth in 1986, the shrimp Rimicaris exoculata colonizes most sites of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between 1700 and 4000 m depth. These shrimp form "swarms" on the walls of hydrothermal chimneys, with densities of up to 3000 shrimp per m 2 . The average size of Rimicaris exoculata specimens at adulthood is 5.5 cm. Juveniles are easily distinguished from adults by their orange color. This color is due to the presence of a reserve of pigmented lipids that is absent in adults. The shrimp Mirocaris fortunata is known only from hydrothermal sites of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, although there is another species belonging to the same genus ( Mirocaris indica ) from a hydrothermal site in the Indian Ocean. Smaller in size than Rimicaris exoculata (about 3 cm in total length), it is found in groups along the depressions formed by active chimneys. |
