Summary

[edit]
Description

the area around the field station is a maze of forest creeks flowing through coniferous taiga. The whole network of these rivulets is very close to the vast Irtysh floodland, and water rises dramatically in the end of spring - the whole area covered with green grass in the picture becomes navigable. The dark forest in the background made up from siberian pine, spruce, and firs is rimmed by aspens, some of which get incredibly large there (up to a meter in diameter). The trees in the picture are taller than they look.

The clearing behind the forest is a very large oligotrophic peatbog, which feeds all these creeks. I've geotagged this photo, so you can take a look at the flickr satellite map (they've got really nice new hi-rez satellite images now), this combination of biotopes creates a stunning mosaic.
