Polski: Zakorzeniony w północnoeuropejskiej tradycji motyw gry w karty między płciami jako metafory erotycznej, został tu przyobleczony w nowy kostium post-Caravaggiowskiego quasi-naturalizmu. Drastyczność tej szczególnej redakcji tematu - sceny oszustwa karcianego w domu publicznym - została nawet uwypuklona poprzez dużą skalę obrazu, jego silne kontrasty światłocieniowe i barwne, a także dążenie do jak największej iluzji przestrzennej. Jednocześnie precyzja środków narracji wizualnej w opisie gestów, wyrazu twarzy, wymiany spojrzeń, układu kart na stole, pozwala widzowi zaznać przyjemności wciągnięcia w akcję z pozycji bliskiego obserwatora, zajmującego miejsce przy jednym z boków stołu. To każe przynajmniej na chwilę zapomnieć, że nominalnie dzieło to ma ostrzegać przed pokusami "wesołego towarzystwa". Wykonane około 1626 roku, niedługo po powrocie z Włoch do rodzinnej Goudy, jest jednym z bardzo rzadkich malowideł artysty pochodzącego ze słynnej dynastii witrażowników.
