| Description |
This photos shows the mating (alpha) male and female coyotes and their one pup sleeping in a meadow in the morning. The male on the left is awake and watching over the female and pup as they sleep. Coyotes have a safe area that serves as the home base where they can relax and sleep. They use a den only before the pups are born and for a few weeks after. As would be expected, they are difficult to see when they sleep. This is the coyote family whose territory includes Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado. The family includes a mating male and female, a younger female that is probably a year old, and 1 pup. It is common for one of the coyotes from the previous year to stay and help with the pups the following year. The number of coyotes in a family unit or pack is determined by the alpha male and female depending on the food supply. The two female coyotes in this family have mange and appear to not be in good health. The coyote family in this area had 4 pups last year (2017), 2 or 3 pups in 2016, and 6 pups in 2015.
