[edit]DescriptionCorrespondence related to death of Louis Mountbatten (1979) (20558510358).jpg |
On 27 August 1979, Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, was assassinated while holidaying in Mullaghmore, Ireland. Mountbatten and three others were killed by a bomb which had been planted in his fishing boat by a member of the IRA. Later that same day, the IRA killed 18 British soldiers. Lord Mountbatten, a British statesman and naval officer, was 79 when he was killed. He was an uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and second cousin once removed to Elizabeth II. Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of India and the first Governor-General of the Independent Dominion of India. The two pieces of correspondence pictured above are from a file titled ‘Death of the Earl Mountbatten of Burma’. The first is a telegram sent from the Queen’s Private Secretary to Keith Holyoake, Governor-General of New Zealand, informing him of Mountbatten’s death. The second piece of correspondence is a draft telegram written by Holyoake to the Queen, expressing his condolences and his ‘abhorrence of such a callous and brutal crime.’ The Queen replied on 29 August, stating ‘I sincerely thank you and the people of New Zealand for your kind message of sympathy on the death of Lord Mountbatten. Elizabeth R.’ The file is from an accession (W4187) which includes 1905-1991 correspondence to and from the Governor-General on a wide range of subjects.
