SAVANNAH, Ga. – Regulatory specialists with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District toured an active Phase III archaeological excavation site near the Highway 204 expansion, April 25, 2013. Public Archaeologist Rita Elliot of New South Associates, a small business based in Rincon, Ga., led the tour. The visit served as a training opportunity for Corps project managers to gain real-world insights on cultural resource mitigation. The Georgia Department of Transportation is expanding Highway 204 and discovered cultural resources at the project site. DOT is required to survey and excavate artifacts on the site before completing the road expansion, in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act. Known as the "Abercorn Site," the area was used as an encampment for Union forces during the Civil War and was part of two plantations. So far during the excavation, the team discovered multiple artifacts on the site, including building remnants, chimney bases, brass buttons, ammunition, pottery, and railroad spikes. The excavation is scheduled to last through May 2013. USACE photos by George Jumara. |
