Description
English: Coronation cloak of Marie of Romania, photographed at Art Safari 2024, Bucharest, Romania. On loan from Peleș National Museum (Peleș Castle).


Conceived by royal court painter Costin Petrescu (1871-1954) and commissioned for the royal coronaiton in Alba Iulia 15 October 1922, it took over a year to construct. Embroidered by Elena Niculsecu Frunzeanu, headmistress of the School of Sericulture and Weaving, Bucharest. Some of the embroideries were displayed as early as June 1921.

Lamé fabric, gold thread, silk embroider, appliqu´d semi-precious stones and cross-shaped patterns. Woven emblems of all of the provinces of Greater Romania, separated by embroidered wheat ears and sheaves. Edged in ermine, filled on the inside with embroidered cardinal violet silk fringe, with Marie's monogram surmounted by the royal crown. The oval edging has a silk fringe with seven heraldic insignia: the Hohenzollern coat of arms; the coats of arms of Wallachia, Moldavia, Transylvania, Oltenia, Banat, and Dobrogea; and the coat of arms of the Edinburgh family.
