Summary
[edit]DescriptionCorona Arch (west of Moab, Utah, USA) (25240977976).jpg |
Corona Arch, developed in the Jurassic of Utah, USA. Rock arches are rare erosional features. Rock arches that are not formed by river or stream erosion are called "natural arches". Those that are formed by river or stream erosion are called "natural bridges". Natural bridges are rarer than natural arches. The highest concentration of natural arches on Earth is Arches National Park in eastern Utah, USA. Very small erosional openings in rocks are called windows. Larger erosional openings are arches. The natural arch shown above is Corona Arch (also known as "Little Rainbow Bridge"). It is not in a park. It formed by differential weathering and differential erosion of quartzose sandstones of the Navajo Sandstone (Lower Jurassic). Locality: Corona Arch, northern side of Bootlegger Canyon, 3.5 to 4.0 air miles west of Moab, southern Grand County, eastern Utah, USA ( 38° 34' 47.66" North latitude, 109° 37' 12.35" West longitude) |
