My other attempt at a Jane's Walk this year was a bit of a mixed success, in that it was cancelled and I showed up anyway without knowing this. So I ended up giving myself a self-guided tour of Markham's Cornell neighbourhood, which probably wasn't as informative as if I'd had a guide who'd actually ever been there before. Cornell is built in a "New Urbanism" style, which is supposed to replicate the compact, walkable, mixed-use qualities of traditional (i.e. pre-car) cities. New Urbanism developments are often accused of missing the point, by simply building vast swaths of faux-Victorian houses on a rectangularish street grid, maybe with rear-alley garages if they're feeling really ambitious. How does Cornell fare? Let's find out! |
