Title
Copper Alloy enamelled Bow and Fantail Fibula Brooch
Description
English: A copper-alloy bow and fantail fibula brooch. There are two parallel grooves along the top of the bow. Patches of silvering survive on the head, bow headloop and foot. The triangular foot is decorated with what Mills, N. (see below) describes as a Celtic-style scroll pattern. The protruding areas of the tail decoration were silvered, and the depressions around them were originally enamelled in blue and red. Only small fragments of enamel survive. A small hole is present at the edge of the tail close to the point were the tail joins the bow. I am uncertain whether this hole, which has a diameter of c.1.70mm, is part of the design or if it has occurred unintentionally post manufacture. The headloop has an internal diameter of 3.44mm. The hinged pin is complete. Dimensions: length 40.43mm, width 18.55mm, height 12.05mm, weight 6.96g. See Mills, N. 2000 (p.46, item RB93) for a similar example, which has been dated from the late 1st to 2nd century AD.
