English: In the face of natural or man-made disasters, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) provides On-Demand Mapping services leveraging satellite imagery and other geospatial data. This information is key to supporting response and recovery efforts around the globe, particularly regarding floods, earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes, fires, volcanic eruptions, humanitarian crises, and tsunamis. For emergency response, the CEMS On-Demand Mapping Service delivers geospatial information within hours or days of activation and is useful for providing mapping products for identifying and assessing the location and extent of affected areas, as well as evaluating resulting damage from an event. This image shows the area of interest of CEMS On-Demand Mapping activations in support of emergency response activities in Europe between 1 September and 8 October 2024. In this timeframe and region, the service was activated 17 times, including 12 times for floods, 1 time for a landslide, and 4 times for wildfires. The image also shows four Copernicus Sentinel satellite images. From left to right, a Copernicus Sentinel-3 image acquired on 17 September 2024 which shows the smoke from forest fires which affected northern Portugal. The next image, acquired by Copernicus Sentinel-2 on 21 September 2024, shows flooding in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The third image, acquired by Copernicus Sentinel-2 on 18 September 2024, shows flooded areas in southwestern Poland. Finally, a detail from the Copernicus Sentinel-3 image acquired on 1 October 2024 shows the smoke plume from the wildfire which affected Corinthia, Greece. Open data and information from Copernicus supports global emergency management efforts by helping authorities and communities carry out response efforts and allocate resources more efficiently. |
