The two thermometers were calibrated at the boiling point of water.where each read 0.3° too low. Following this report the readings observed in the ventshave been corrected to accord with the recalibration. Becauseof the great variations encountered from i)lace to place in acolumn of escaping gas it was not considered advisable toattempt to read the instruments closer than the nearest 5°.Where the correction is appHed the resultant temperatures areusually expressed by an intermediate figure. It could be thus readily determined whether agiven vent was merely at the boiling point—which of course isthe temperature of the vast majority of the orifices—or whetherit was higher.
