Condylactis gigantea (Weinland, 1860) - giant Caribbean sea anemone at a patch reef. Sea anemones are relatives of corals and jellyfish. They are basically bags with tentacles. The tentacles of sea anemones have stinging cells (nematocysts) that paralyze or kill prey, which are then drawn toward the mouth at the center of the tentacle cluster. Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Actiniaria, Actiniidae Locality: patch reef just west of Cut Cay, eastern Graham's Harbour, offshore northeastern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas |
