Description

This condolence letter was sent by Robert W. Schmitt, Donald Mellins' Commanding Officer.

"Dear Mr. Mellins, By this time you will have been notified of the death of your son, Donald. It is not my intention as Commanding Officer of the Company of which he was an integral part, to offer you mere perfunctory condolences. I share your bereavement sincerely and extend to you my deepest sympathy. Your son conducted himself gallantly in action against the enemy on Peleliu, Palau Islands, and has been recommended for a Navy Cross. It was in repulsing an enemy tank attack at the edge of the airport that he gave his life-that others might live. Single-handed he knocked out a Jap tank-Donald Mellins was an honor to his command and the country he so courageously served. Respectfully yours, Robert W. Schmitt, 1st Lt. (Commanding officer)"
