CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Arc flashes bounced off the protective clothing of Steve Irwin, a native Temecula resident Dec. 11 as he welded the condenser water supply that are attached to the cooling towers at the Replacement Naval Hospital Project. Irwin with Monaco Mechanical welded three types of passes required to complete the welding process.

The cooling towers create the cold water needed for the Replacement Naval Hospital. Special gear that protected Irwin is called an automatic mechanical welders mask that changes color as the arc becomes hot. Gloves, jackets, boots are required by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for welders operations.
