Concrete barriers on the Ridgeway (here classified as a Restricted Byway) near Waylands Smithy in Oxfordshire, England

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In the foreground a public right-of-way runs from left to right across the photograph. The Ridgeway National Trail uses this right of way, which was formerly classified as a Byway. The right of way is currently classified as a Restricted Byway, meaning it is open to people on foot and riders on bicycles and on horseback but not to motor vehicles (except for access). A sign on the barriers states that the barriers have been installed to prevent unauthorised access to The Ridgeway by motor vehicles for the safety of legitimate users of the route. The gap between the barriers would not prevent access by motorcycles, but is likely to prevent access by four-wheeled motor vehicles. Straight ahead is a gate that leads to the partially restored megalithic burial chamber known as Wayland’s Smithy, less than 100 metres to the north of the Ridgeway.
