[edit]DescriptionConcorde - Back of the Rolls-Royce-Snecma Olympus 593 (7181583628).jpg |
This picture shows the back of the Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 with the afterburning jetpipe removed. Visible are, from furthest to closest, the following parts: - Last stage of the turbine - Straightening vanes (to remove the swirl of the processed exhaust gas) - Afterburner ring/flame holder This last section made the Concorde unique. Unlike any other airliner, the Concorde used afterburning, a technology devised to increase thrust by reigniting the exhaust air which had been already been processed by the compressor and turbine sections of the jet engine. The circular piece shown on first plane is the afterburner/flameholder ring, which holds a group of injectors that spray fuel into the flow of very hot gas exiting the turbine and causing it to immediately ignite. This post-combustion process takes place in the afterburning jet pipe. Once the already hot air is reheated, there is an increase in the produced thrust. In the case of the Olympus 593, the thirsty afterburner increased the engine's thrust by almost 20%. |
