RETURNING FROM AN OUTING HINTS ON PUNTING TO FOWL 263 fired from a punt. The gunner in a punt shoots along andover his birds, and if these latter are massed in a huge packon the water nearly every pellet tells. It is only reasonable tothink that punt-guns, like all other shot-throwing weapons,kill most fowl when set low. Of course, as we have pointedout, there is a limit to low setting, on accouut of the trajectoryof the missiles, or, in other words, a suitable height wherefromthe correct elevation can be given the gun so as to counteractgravitation acting on the shot charge. The benefit found in the killing of a large number of birdsby firing a gun set low, can be experimentally exemplified bytrying an ordinary shoulder, or what is called by puntsmena hand, gun at birds (paper or cardboard ones) from theshoulder, and then from a low-set stand.
