Italiano: È formato da due astine rettangolari di pari lunghezza incernierate fra di loro in uno dei vertici. La cerniera consente l'apertura completa, di 180°, del compasso in modo da ottenere un unico misuratore lungo quanto la somma delle due astine Su entrambe le facce sono incise le scale graduate da utilizzare per le misure e per i rapporti. Si poteva determinare il valore delle corde, alcune caratteristiche fisiche dei metalli principali, le dimensioni di solidi e poligoni Veniva anche utilizzato come calibro.
Funzione
Era uno strumento fondamentale in tutti i casi in cui si doveva eseguire disegni tecnici; in particolare trovava largo impiego in topografia e cartografia Un'incisione molto evidente riporta la firma del costruttore e il luogo di fabbricazione.
