English: The grave of the sailor of the Royal Navy is dated on 18th September 1940.
The 7 airmen were the crew of Lancaster DS835 of the 115 squadron. On the way to Berlin in Germany the plane exploded near Heemskerk on a height of 15.000ft. The explosion was on 16th December 1943 at 6:15 pm, 1 hour after take off from airfield RAF-Witchford. The cause of the explosion is unclear. Most likely is a technical malfunction of the plane. Witness stated there was no German anti aircraft firing at the time, because it was extremely dark. The plane was already behind her squadron and had only 4 hours of service time. The grave of the Royal marine is dated on 29th May 1944. On the plot is also a memorial for casualties of war of Heemskerk that are buried elsewhere. Unidentified casualties that were buried on the chuchyard during the Second World War are also commemorated. |
