Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Creator: Unidentified

Location: Chinchilla, Queensland
Description: The Commercial Hotel in Chinchilla Street was destroyed by fire in the early morning. Mrs O'Sullivan was the owner and occupier of the hotel (Information from: Courier Mail, 29 August, 1922).
Chinchilla is a thriving town in the western Darling Downs, 295km NW of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. Ludwig Leichhardt named the area in 1844 after jinchilla, the local Aboriginal name for cypress pines. Grain-growing is the traditional industry, as well as cattle, sheep, pigs, timber and more recently, grapes, cotton and watermelon. The cactoblastis insect was introduced to eradicate the prickly pear cactus infestation and the Cactoblastis Memorial Hall has been erected at Boonarga 8km east of Chinchilla.
