Summary

Description

On 4 Jan the Kabul Army Air Wing and the 6th Kandak Commandos completed the first-ever, all-Afghan air assault. This first air assault operation for Commandos in Army Air Corps aircraft did require a strong advisor/mentor role, but it was a great start for executing coalition operations with heavy emphasis put on mission planning.

4 Mi-17s with 20 Afghan aircrew members and 4 U.S. air advisors, 71 Commandos and their mentors, a U.S. JTAC, and 2 AH-64s with crews, participated in the planning and operation.

Short summary of the mission follows:

- After load/unload training at the Camp Morehead pick-up zone the flight departed on time for their target in the Sayed Abad District of Wardak Province. Enroute the Mi-17s "checked in" with the AH-64s to ensure that the landing zone was "cold" and completed the infiltration on schedule. The Commandos were infiltrated just a few hundred meters from their target. The Mi-17s returned to Camp Morehead, completed a quick debrief and then assumed an alert status with the Commando Quick Reaction Force. - In the afternoon, the Commandos called for exfiltration and just 40 minutes later the Mi-17s were on site. Communications with the U.S. JTAC was established and threats and winds were quickly passed to the aircrew. Once again the AH-64s provided armed coverage over the landing zone. The exfiltration was executed flawlessly despite full passenger loads and the landing zone at 6,800 feet above sea level (another added bonus of Mi-17 use in country). - The day ended at Camp Morehead with a mass debriefing and was followed by an aircrew debriefing.

As with all operations there were lessons learned but overall "Kommando Toufon," or "Commando Storm" was a complete success...and a great foundation from which to grow added capability from!
