Description

Commander Max Zimmerman (BUMED 09-8979-1), U.S. Navy BUMED Library and Archives

Description: Commander Max Zimmerman, Medical Service Corps, U.S. Navy. Commanding Officer, Naval School of Health Administration.

Max Edward Zimmerman was born in Austria in 1894, emigrated to the U.S., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1913. He attended training at the Pharmacist Mates School in Virginia before being assigned to the Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Florida in December 1919, where he stayed until 1922. He then served in the Medical Department at the Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island and then returned to duty at the Naval Hospital in Pensacola. He served at several stations, including the Naval Station in Tutuila, Samoa, the Naval Dispensary in San Pedro, California, and the Naval Hospital, Puget Sound, Washington, before being assigned to the U.S.S. Relief. He then undertook teaching at the Hospital Corps School in San Diego, the Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Illinois, the Naval Hospital in Farragut, Ohio, and at Pearl Harbor. He assumed command of the Naval School of Hospital Administration, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, in August 1949. He held that position until 1953 when he became an Administrative Officer at the District Medical Office headquarters in Boston, and he retired in October 1956. He died in 1990.
