Summary
[edit]DescriptionColvin Gardens Apartments, Buffalo, New York - 20220902.jpg |
English: As seen in Buffalo, New York in September 2022: what was once called the Colvin Gardens Apartments comprises 13 buildings of 12 units each, lining the the half-mile stretch of the south side of Kenmore Avenue centered roughly on the corner of Colvin Avenue, along the city's northern boundary. The buildings stand three stories tall, are constructed of cinderblocks veneered with brick and stucco, and sport a simplified and streamlined version of the then-popular Tudor Revival style: besides the aforementioned composite façade, note the warm earth-toned color scheme, the smallish windows, the decorative masonry work that adorns the arched twin bays that extend vertically up the façade flanking the entrances, and the entrances themselves, deeply recessed and framed by Gibbs surrounds. The buildings were constructed in two stages: the first, located west of Colvin Boulevard, were completed in March 1930; those depicted here were part of the second stage, located east of that intersection and opened to residents the following year. According to classified ads placed at the time by local realty company Askey & Hager, each unit contained a living room, kitchenette with refrigerator, dinette, two bedrooms, bathroom, steam heating system, and in-home incinerator, and, at a monthly rent of $60, constituted the "best value in Buffalo". Nowadays the complex has been subdivided, and the individual buildings are owned by a range of different companies. |
