Summary
[edit]DescriptionColumns, Kom Ombo Temple, Kom Ombo, AG, EGY (48005075191).jpg | This is the Temple of Kom Ombo, located on the banks of the Nile River at the town of Kom Ombo in Upper Egypt. Constructed during the Ptolemaic Dynasty between 180 BC (under Ptolemy VI Philometor) and 47 BC (under Ptolemy XIII Theos Philopator), the temple is of a unique “double” design for two sets of gods, with half of the structure being dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, who was a deity that represented fertility and the creation of the world, along with the more minor gods Hathor and Khonsu. The other half of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Haroeris, along with the gods Tasenetnofret and Panebtawy. The temple has two sets of courtyards, hallways, sanctuaries, and rooms that are parallel to one another. The temple complex also contains a unique keyhole-shaped nilometer, used to measure the depth of the Nile River, an a relief featuring an ancient calendar and the Egyptian system of measuring time. The temple was abandoned around the time that the Romans enforced the worship of Christianity during the 4th Century AD, with the temple being defaced by Christians whom used the structure as a church, with parts of the complex collapsing due to the Nile River, earthquakes, and builders using its stones for new construction projects nearby. The ruin was cleared of debris and restored under Jacques de Morgan in 1893. |
