Description

Founded as the Columbus Arsenal in 1863, it was changed to Columbus Barracks as its mission changed in 1875. It was renamed Fort Hayes in 1922. By the mid-1970s it was mostly abandoned by the Army and was purchased by Columbus Public Schools. Much of it has been adaptively reused into the Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center, while other portions still stand abandoned and boarded up.

Fort Hayes is on the National Register as a historic district #70000491.
