He afterward removed to Vermontand died there October 24, 1879, ae. 79 years, 10 monthsand 3 days. Harding Clarke, born in 1802. He was aphysician in Swanton, Vt. Was a linguist, speaking andwriting several languages. He was an intimate friend ofone of Gov. Levi Lincolns sons, who died in early man-hood, I believe, and the tradition is given me by a des-cendant of Dr. Whittemore, that Levi Lincoln, perceivinghis natural ability, offered to defray his expenses throughcollege. Mary Caroline, born 1809; married Benjamin Smith,lived for a while in a very pretty place on Lincoln Street,afterward removed to Canada, and then to Michigan.Benjamin Smith was Deacon of the church where heresided.
