Description |
English: A hoard of 47 Roman coppr-alloy coins dating from the period AD 163-250 that includes 27 sestertii and 20 sestertii, dupondii or aes. Four of the sesterti are fused in two sets of two. The emperors and empresses featured are: Lucius Verus (1); Lucilla (3), Marcus Aurelias (2), Faustina II (2), Lucilla or Faustina (2), Commodus (3), Didius Julianus (1), Septimius Severus (1) and Severus Alexander (1). The remaining coins are so worn that they are unattributed.
Sestertii 1) A worn copper-alloy sestertius of Lucius Verus (AD 161-169) dating to the period AD 163-164 (Reece Period 8). [TR POT VI ]IMP IIII [COS II S] C reverse depicting Victory standing next to a palm tree with shield attached, inscribed VIC PAR. Mint of Rome. As RIC III, p. 328, no. 1456. Diameter: 27.2mm Diameter: 29.8mm Diameter: 30.4mm Diameter: 28.2mm Diameter: 32.3mm Diameter: 30.4mm Diameter: 28.1 8) An incomplete very worn copper-alloy sestertius, probably of Faustina II (AD 147-175) dating to the period AD 161-175 (Reece Period 8). Possibly a [FECVNDITAS S C] reverse type depicting Fecunditas standing right holding sceptre and child. Uncertain mint. Possibly as RIC III, p. 345, no 1638. Diameter: 31.9mm Diameter: 31.1mm
