Vindeliker coin

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The oldest coins minted in southern Germany are those of the Celts. These include the so-called rainbow bowls. They are attributed to the Vindeliker tribe. The arched fronts show wreaths of curls, leaf wreaths with bird heads or snakes and other dragon-like animals. Balls appear on the concave backs in connection with the typical Celtic neck ring, cross stars or palmettes and corresponding combinations. Popular superstition gave the coins their name. According to them, they should have dripped down from the rainbow and be endowed with a mysterious magic. The specimen shows a clearly legible inscription on the back. It reads ATVLLOS and perhaps designates the mint lord.
