| Description |
English: These remains are from a North American B-25J-10-NC Mitchell c/n 108-35430 which was built in 1944 with the US military serial 43-36140. She was allocated to the 77th Bomb Squadron, part of the 28th Bomb Group under the 11th Air Force and was based on Attu Island, one of the Westernmost islands of Alaska. She was lost during a bombing mission on 19th May 1945 when she suffered an engine failure and had to carry out a wheels-up landing on Shumshu Island, part of the Kuril islands and under Japanese control at the time. All six crew were taken prisoner but were later released. Sadly three later died when the cargo ship they were on, the ‘Tenryo Maru’, was torpedoed and sank.
After the war the remains of the B-25 were cut up with only the nose and engines remaining. They were recovered for the museum in 2003. Wings Museum, Balcombe, West Sussex, UK 20th August 2020 |
