Cobb & Co's Coach On 11 October 1861, coach service Cobb & Co embarked on its first service between Dunedin and Gabriel’s Gully, Otago. Originating in Melbourne, Cobb & Co was already an established transport service in Australia by the time it crossed the ditch to New Zealand. The discovery of gold in Gabriel’s Gully quickly saw a massive influx of gold-diggers to the region, and the increasing population of the area created a market for a form of public transport. Cobb & Co proprietor Charles Cole arrived in Dunedin in 1861 with a coach, five wagons and 54 horses, and quickly established a New Zealand branch of the business. The presence of Cobb & Co in Otago meant that the public could travel in some form of comfort and speed – the trip from Dunedin to Gabriel’s Gully could now be made in nine hours, rather than two days. Cobb & Co continually expanded its services through out New Zealand until the spread of railways in the 1880s and 1890s began to make it obsolete. The last Cobb & Co coach run was made in 1924. This 1860 photo shows one of the Cobb & Co coaches loaded with passengers, outside a Cobb & Co office. It comes from a series of photographs relating to ‘early coaching days’, in the Post Office record group. This group includes a large amount of visual material relating to the history of New Zealand, used in displays and publications by the Post Office.
