Notes | "Dress uniform belonging to the late Colonel T. M. Haultain" Theodore Minet Haultain came to New Zealand with the 8th Fencibles in 1849. After serving in India with the 39th Regiment of Foot for ten years, Haultain was appointed as Staff Officer of Pensioners and was one of the Staff Officers assigned to the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps being assembled for service and settlement in New Zealand. In 1849 Haultain embarked with the eighth division of Fencibles bound for New Zealand and was settled, initially, at Onehunga. With the retirement of Lieutenant-Colonel Gray Haultain transferred to the Panmure settlement, and in 1856 retired from the regular Army and settled at Mangere. With the commencement of the Waikato Campaign in 1863 he came out of retirement and assisted with the organisation of the Auckland Militia, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was also involved with the establishment and command of the Waikato Military Settlers, first commanding the 2nd Waikato Militia Regiment and eventually rising to the rank of Colonel-Commandant, in command of all four regiments. During this time Haultain was present at the Battle of Orakau, and was promoted to Colonel for his actions during that battle. In 1865 Haultain retired from the military to focus on his political career. He had been member for the Southern Division of Auckland 1859-1861 and with the defeat of the Weld Ministry was offered the portfolio of Defence Minister in the new Stafford Ministry. He held this post from 1865 until his retirement in 1869. For some time he continued his involvement in local and national politics in various capacities. Haultain died in Parnell, Auckland, in 1902 at the age of 85. He was buried at St John’s College. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
