Clun Castle makes a superb sight as it heads east out of Cardiff Central, bound for Pengam Sidings. Having arrived from Birmingham Snow Hill with the outward working of the 'Return to Steam Celebration' railtour, the loco and stock will be stabled in Pengam Sidings before making their way back to Cardiff Central for the 1719 return departure to Snow Hill. I had not realised the historical significance of the working until I saw the train. According to the Vintage Trains Website: "Clun Castle will retrace the route of her 1972 trip, exactly fifty years ago, when she hauled the first public steam excursion on British Rail between Birmingham and Didcot after the infamous ban on steam traction." Hence the very smart headboard on the loco. Class 47 loco D1755 is on the rear of the train. |
