A nationally endangered species "A tufted, mat-forming lily, which grows to 50cm tall. It has narrow, linear leaves with slightly irregularly spaced teeth along the margins, sheaths and midribs. The flower head is 20-90cm long with the flowers being starshaped, blue and yellow in colour and strongly fragrant. It flowers in Oct/Nov/Dec/Jan/Feb. The fruit of the lily is an oval purple berry up to 7mm long found in during February and March." Has been found at about 100 sites throughout Port Phillip, Corangamite, North Central and Gippsland Regions. Found in Grassy or grassy woodland communities, which are listed as Endangered Vegetation Classes. "The species is not known to be naturally regenerating from seed in the wild. It is concentrated in grasslands, which require burning every 3-5 years." - Information from DSE Vulnerable Victorians - Matted Flax-Lilly (PDF) Merri Creek Management Committee volunteers setup a shade shelter on the edge of the Bababi Djinanang native grassland on Saturday November 5, 2011 as part of the Fawkner Festa, and offered guided walks through the wildflower grasslands. Free sausages for those folks who ventured past. Bababi Djinanang is a native grassland reserve in Fawkner, near the end of Jukes Road and Merri Creek. The site is fenced but is accessible to walkers. The native grasslands is an imporatant ecosystem which once stretched for hundreds of miles across the basaltic plains west of Melbourne. With development only about 1% of these grasslands are left in small pockets which harbour an important diversity of native flora and fauna species. |
