| Description |
English: Arms of Clifford: Chequy or and azure, a fess gules. These were the family's later arms. The family's earliest arms had a bend, not a fess, as borne by the Clifford lords of Clifford Castle in Herefordshire, until the death of the last in the senior male line, Walter III de Clifford (d.1263). The earliest arms were: Chequy or and azure, a bend gules. His younger brother was Roger de Clifford (d.1231) of Tenbury, who adopted for his own arms the difference of a fess in place of the bend.
