Description
English:

After Bellevue, Washington, passed its first school levy, the community's new schoolhouse opened in 1892. Some children walked up to two miles each way to attend school. Bellevue School was located on Main Street, so many called it the Main Street School. In this 1890s photo, a group of school children and their teachers stand on the steps of Bellevue School to have their photo taken. Some of the girls in the foreground wear pinafores to protect their dresses from ink and other stains. Albert S. Burrows, a teacher in the photo (location not identified), later became Superintendent of Schools.
