Title
Clasp from Swinhope
Description
English: Copper alloy and iron

Possible Pointed Clasp. Cast flat tear-drop shaped plate with projecting point and an iron rivet or pin of diameter/thickness circa 5mm set centrally; on the reverse more extensive ferrous corrosion may indicate this object was attached to iron. The form resembles Early Medieval single sharp-hooked clasps (Read 2008, page 24, Early Medieval Class D type 1); the date-range of these - Anglo-Scandinavian in a Northern context - is similar to that of heavier stirrup mounts which also feature frequent ferrous metal traces. The upper edge opposite the point is abraded and probably broken. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1100.

Length: 24.7mm, Width: 14.9mm, Thickness (clear of iron): 2.5mm, Weight: 2.42gms.
