Description
English: Civitatis Avenionis omnimq viarum et aedificiorum eius perfecta delineatio hoc anno MCCXVIII

A map of the town of Avignon (France) in 8 panels dated 1618.

Printed at the bottom of the map (to the right of Porte St Michel and illegible in this copy) are the names Marcus Antonius Gandolfus (Marco Antonio Gandolfo) and Theodorus Hochstraie (Théodore Hoochstraten, an engraver from The Hague) (Girard 1958, pp. 76-77).

At the bottom left in a cartouche there is a dedication to "Io. Franc.o ex co. Guidiis à Balneo" by "Odoricus Aloysius Septempedanus".

The panels of the map are reproduced in a 1958 book by Joseph Girard Évocation du Vieil Avignon.

The map is discussed by Alain Breton in an article published in 1986.

Notes

The river to the north of the town is labelled "La Sorgue". This is an error - the river is the Rhône. See Girard 1958, p. 78 "une erreur surprenante dans un document si étudié".

The Montpellier city library has a copy of the map: Catalogue number: EstL0312. The author is listed as Jacques Pletinckx. A high resolution scan is available from the library here. Below the cartouche at the bottom left in small letters is the text "Iaqves Pletinc Fecit". In the Harvard scan this text is illegible.

The Bibliothèque Ceccano in Avignon also has a copy of the map Catalogue number: Est. Atl. 96 but a scan is not available online.

A low-quality image of the map is available on page 10 in a document available here The authors cite a copy held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Richelieu (Va 84 Tome 1 H 159061-8).
