Title
City Hall, Columbus, Ohio.
Description
Prior to 1871 the municipal offices of Columbus were scattered over the city in rented property. The city never owned an administration building before the big stone structure, now occupied by the mayor and the several departments of public affairs, was finished that year. It was built at an approximated cost of $600,000, three years being taken in its construction. The City Hall was never completed according to its original plan, notwithstanding the extravagant outlay represented in its present condition. A high clock tower was designed to surmount it. The arches were found to be too weak, however, to stand any additional strain and the idea was abandoned, leaving the City building in its unfinished state, with a low flat front.
