Summary
[edit]DescriptionCircles in the rock - geograph.org.uk - 1115718.jpg |
English: Circles in the rock The circles and arcs cut into this levelled area of rock were used as templates by workmen constructing the ill-fated North Carr lighthouse. The cut stones for the tower were checked against these shapes to ensure they would fit perfectly before being shipped out from the adjacent Fife Ness harbour to the offshore North Carr rocks. Construction went on from 1813 till 1818 when the nearly completed lighthouse was destroyed in a winter storm. In 1840 it was decided to erect a metal beacon on what was left of the lighthouse base, and this still survives. |
