Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cipher wheel, Scotographia, Biblioteca Teresiana, Mantua
[1] “wheel for writing darkly”: the system seems to be based on the letters of a verse from the Bible (Psalm CXX, 2), translated into Latin as “Domine libera animam meam a labiis iniquis et a lingua dolosa”. At the centre of the “wheel” on plate I is the image of an insect trapped in a spider’s web, followed by a scroll reading “RETI MEO CAPITVR”. Plate I IIII features a similar image on a smaller scale and a similar “wheel”, with the Hebrew inscription “and he will be caught in My snare”,
