| Description |
English: Cinderford's first railway station The remains of the platform of Cinderford's old railway station, always unpopular with passengers because of its distance from the town centre. The Severn & Wye, who operated the line, laid on a coach to meet each train and transport passengers the mile or so into the town centre, but this was not enough and in 1900 the S&W opened an extension to their line with a new station closer to the town centre. There is very little left of the "new" station - itself closed to passengers in 1958 and redeveloped in the 1970s as a small housing estate - but ironically, the remnants of the platform of the old station survive, forgotten, in a clump of trees, 120 years after it was last used. |
