| Description |
English: Churchill Barrier no 1 The Churchill Barriers - there are four in total - were built to defend Scapa Flow, where the Royal Navy's home fleet was based, in the Second World War. A by-product of this was to connect Orkney's southern isles - Burray and South Ronaldsay - directly to the Mainland. The barriers are now crossed by the A961.
