Bust signed and dated 1778. Museum label says: "Sir Thomas Gascoigne (1745-1810) was a cultivated Yorkshire landowner who supported the cause of American Independence. He is shown bare-chested in the classical manner. Hewetson was an Irish sculptor working in Rome and he made this bust along with a duplicate for friends of Sir Thomas near Leeds. Rome; cast by Luigi Valadier, Bronze. " |
