Description
This is a picture of the interior of the Chittenden Hotel, showing the lobby and the music alcove. The Chittenden Hotel was founded by Henry T. Chittenden in 1889 on the corner of North High Street and Spring Street. The following year a fire broke out and destroyed the building. Henry rebuilt the hotel and reopened in September 1892. In November 1893, the Henrietta Theater next door to the hotel caught fire and spread to the hotel. The hotel building was again destroyed. Henry again decided to rebuild but made sure that it was built with materials that were fire-proof: brick, concrete, stone, tile, and steel. It opened in 1895 and remained opened for 77 years. It closed in 1972 and then was demolished the following year.
