| Description |
English: "The four-story business block which stood at the northwest corner of High and Spring streets, was transformed into a hotel in 1889-90, by its owner, H. T. Chittenden. The building went under an extensive remodeling process to fit itself for its new purpose and two stories were added to its height. The improvement cost $200,000, and an additional $122,000 was spent in furnishings. The result was one of the handsomest hotels in the state. After being successfully operated for about a year it was totally destroyed by fire, but was immediately rebuilt. In 1893, the second Chittenden hotel was also destroyed by fire and in in 1895 the third Chittenden hotel was opened on this site." |
