The Hall of Heroes Award Program started in 1999 as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Millennium activities. The purpose of the Hall of Heroes program is to recognize contributions with a direct and lasting impact on national and international agriculture and related programs. The criteria for induction into the USDA Hall of Heroes requires contributions that reflect a lifetime commitment of service to achieving the mission and vision of USDA, demonstrate National and International prominence and public recognition, helped to shape Agriculture programs that have worldwide impact, demonstrate a groundbreaking role in breaking down barriers to further the role of agriculture, and demonstrate a legacy that continues to grow. Mary-Dell Chilton, Ph.D., is one of the founders of modern plant biotechnology and is recognized for her groundbreaking research and its continued impact on agriculture. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Chilton led a collaborative research study that produced the first transgenic (genetically engineered) plants. She moved to Syngenta in 1983, and in honor of her many achievements, Syngenta created the Mary-Dell Chilton Center in 2002, a new administrative and conference center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Chilton is also the author of more than 100 scientific publications. Chilton was the first to demonstrate the presence of a fragment of Agrobacterium Ti plasmid DNA in the nuclear DNA of crown gall tissue and showed that genes responsible for causing disease could be removed from the bacterium without adversely affecting its ability to insert its own DNA into plant cells and modify the plants’ genome. Recently Chilton was inaugurated into the 2015 National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF), which honors those who have conceived, patented and perfected technological and scientific advancements that have led to growth for both the U.S. and beyond. All NIHF inductees hold a U.S. patent and have changed the world through human, social, and/or economic progress. Chilton’s election was secured by her work that produced the first transgenic plant. Chilton was named a 2013 World Food Prize Laureate, which recognizes contributions in any field involved in the world food supply and emphasizes the importance of a nutritious and sustainable food supply for all people.
